Legal Practice and Government Service
I currently serve as a Member of the Legal Service of the European Commission, providing legal advice on international economic law and representing the European Union in proceedings before international courts and tribunals.
As an EU official, I have previously served the Council of the EU, the European Council, the European External Action Service, and the European Commission (DG for Competition).
Before becoming an EU official, I served as an Associate Legal Officer ("P2") and a Judicial Fellow at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), an adviser before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in the ARA Libertad case, and a Fox International Fellow in Canada, where I was a visiting Fellow at the Outer Space Institute of the University of British Columbia. I have also served as a Graduate Teaching Fellow at Yale University’s History Department and the Jackson Institute (now School) for Global Affairs. Previously, I worked in private legal practice, domestic courts, and in academia, among others.
Scholarship and Teaching
I currently serve as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Brussels School of Governance, where I teach the 'Procedural Law and Practice of International Courts and Tribunals'. I further serve on the Advisory Board of the Max Planck Encyclopedia of Comparative Constitutional Law.
My research interests include the study of lawmaking in different contexts, international dispute settlement, the interaction between international and domestic law, international economic law, the law of the sea and international environmental law, the laws of war, migration and the law, human rights, and the law of international organizations.
My first book, 'Global Lawmaking and Social Change: The Varieties of Customary International Law', was published by Hart Publishing in late 2024. I regularly give presentations and participate in panel discussions on topics relating to my professional and research interests.
Education and Training
I was awarded a doctorate (J.S.D.) from Yale University and my dissertation won the Yale Law School‘s Ambrose Gherini Prize for best written work in public international law. I received the Diploma of the Hague Academy of International Law and hold further degrees from the Yale Law School (LL.M.) and the University of Vienna (Mag. Iur.).
I have also completed the EU Diplomatic Academy, a residential professional development program run by the European External Action Service in conjunction with the College of Europe.
I have been admitted to the New York State Bar since 2014. I am an alumnus of the Fulbright Program, the Fox International Fellowship, and Green College.
